2018 Advent Devotionals

For this Advent season, we are encouraging our Living Hope members to anticipate the birth of Christ through daily devotions. The creator of these personal and family devotionals, Austin Stone Community Church, has graciously given Living Hope permission to use freely. Make time during December 1-25 to pause for Christ.

Before you Begin

Immanuel: God with us. Each day of this Advent guide is written to stir you to know and treasure the God who has torn down the dividing wall of hostility so that we might be brought close to Him. He is the God who wrapped Himself in flesh, lived a perfect life, died a perfect death, and raised victoriously from the grave all so that His people would be saved.

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14 ESV)

Not only did He forgive our sin and save us for all eternity, but He is a God who even now is walking with us through the trials of this life. He gives us faith to obey when it is hard. He cares even for the seemingly smallest of details.

The Advent season can arouse varying and complex emotions for people. For some, it is a time of great joy and happy memories. For others, it is a season marked by trials and even past memories of pain.

So, this Advent season, let’s pause each day and remember how incredible it is that God is truly with us in everything. Our God, all-powerful and all-holy, would have been justified to leave us in our sin, but instead, “God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons” (Galatians 4:3-5 ESV).

Receive the miracle of Christmas: a God who has entered into this world in human form so that you would not be left alone in your sin and suffering, that He would be with you in both the significant and the small.

How to Use

Personal Devotional

The Advent Personal Devotional is a 25-day curriculum of Scriptures, devotionals, and questions that starts December 1 and ends December 25.

We built this because if we aren’t careful, the Christmas season can become about anything but celebrating the coming of Jesus. This devotional is a chance for you to walk through the whole of the Old Testament so that your heart’s affection and mind’s attention are drawn to the coming of Jesus.

To use it, simply find a quiet time and place in your schedule every day of Advent, morning or night. When that time comes, stop what you’re doing, grab your Bible, and navigate to that day’s Advent Personal Devotional.

Read the Scriptures and devotional, answer the questions, and record your notes and answers in your personal journal.

Family Devotional

The Advent Family Devotional is a 25-day curriculum of Scriptures, devotionals, and questions that starts December 1 and ends December 25.

We built this devotional because we want to help your whole family center around specific truths found in the Old Testament and have your hearts stirred together toward the coming of Jesus.

To use this devotional, gather your family at some point each day, morning or night, read the day’s Scripture and devotional, answer the questions as a family, and record your notes and answers in a family journal.
